Northern Voice Singers
Northern Voice is a contemporary Northern Style Powwow Drum group. They sing in their Atikamekw language and their loud crisp vocals are a pleasure to hear. Their name comes from their spiritual relationship with the Wolf. “When we travel the Powwow Trail we are the Wolf pack who howl at the moon.”
Northern Voice is a new generation of singers from the Atikamekw territory of Wemotaci. The Wemotachi Singers helped organise the first Powwow of the Atikamekw Nation 20 years ago. They were influencial in Quebec as they were one of the first strong powwow drum groups and lead the way for many great singers from the Atikamekw People. Those original Singers are still sitting at the drum but the young voices are leading the way for Northern Voice.
The Wemotaci Powwow falls every year on Labour Day weekend and is one of the highlights of the Eastern Canadian Powwow Trail. Over the years the community has invited the best drum groups from all over turtle island to come share their songs and teach their young singers….these days the drum groups coming out of the Atikamekw Nation are holding their own and leading their own powwows. One of the highlights of the Powwow is the Saturday night “Glow Stick Dance” where the Powwow Committee gives thousands of glow sticks to everyone, they turn the lights out….and the Drum Plays…. Song #4 Ka Papinano was the Glow Stick song this past year, listen closely and you can hear the colour!!
