Whole Moose are Back in Town!! Our most popular leather is gold moose 3.5 ounce. Perfect for moccasins, vests, jackets, mukluks etc etc…but the most very exciting leather is when we receive a load of full moose!! We live in the Laurentian Mountains north of Montreal and we gather hides from all over Quebec. Quebec forests are really really dense and getting a moose out of a forest to the nearest road is often quite a challenge. SO most moose end up cut into 4 pieces in order to get them out. But every year we get a few whole moose…and they are rare and very cherished. They don’t last long….so don’t stall for too long.

T’is that time of year….and we have new hides coming. We gather hides from people who are feeding their families but don’t need the hides….Our tannery called to notify us that these are the best moose hides they have seen in years!!! He said, “how the heck did you get such nice clean hides, they are almost perfect!!”.
Yup we are excited….creating perfect moose hide is REALLY tricky….hides have to be salted VERY quickly (with climate change our Septembers are getting warmer which is bad for hides), Moose live a wild and challenging life and their hides often have scratches, scars and other life damages. Hunters often accidentally damage hides as they are removing their moose from the bush. In the tanning process getting perfect colour doesn’t always work with moose. All this to say that when we create perfect moose hide it brings out our happy dance and the dogs howl for joy!!
