Moose Leather

Our leather is from the Laurentian Mountains, north of Montreal in Canada.  Each year during hunting season we recuperate hides from hunters who are feeding their families, but don’t need the hides.  We gather them, process them and have them tanned at a local tannery (not brain tanned).  It is in our Native tradition to waste as little as possible.

    120$ Canadian175$ Canadian

For all you folks that like ‘biker black’ leather we have a treat for you.  We just finished tanning a limited run of Black Moose that we buffed with a finish to give it that shiny/glossy look.  Mose of our leather is matt finish, but when it comes to black some products just need a buffed look.  So 3 1/2 ounce, very soft, beautiful finish.  We have a few whole hides and then a bunch of halves….Enjoy!!

This is wild Moose from the Laurentian Mountains north of Montreal. We gather them from hunters and have them tanned at a local tannery.  This will make some amazing mitts, gauntlets or perhaps a vest or jacket!!

  • Cork Full and Half Moose Leather 3 1/2

    200$ Canadian340$ Canadian

Cork Full Moose Leather 3 1/2 ounce.  Cork leather is a perfect fall colour….kinda like a rusty pumpkin colour on the smooth/skin side.  As a wild hide cork moose highlights the variations in a moose hide.  Full moose show the life and experience of a moose.  There are bumps, warts and scars in the skin and cork makes it visible.  But for artistic creativity those ‘imperfections’ allow for tons of creativity.  Cork make just the most beautiful moccasins, mitts, bags etc.  We have seen a few vest and jackets made with cork and they are breathtaking.  Laying out a pattern on a full moose hide is quite a privilege and tons of fun.  But it does take quote a bit of courage to make the first cut with the scissors. lol…..once again we on’y have a limited number of these full hides….there are holes in some of the hides but generally around the sides and not serious ones.

Gold Moose Leather 3 1/2 ounce is the PERFECT leather for moccasin and mitt making.  Easily sewn by hand, this leather is smooth one side and suede the other.  Extremely soft and supple but will make a pair of moccs that will last for years.  We gather our hides from local hunters who are feeding their families but don’t need the hides.  Our 3 1/2 gold is by far our most popular leather as it is so amazing for so many projects.  We recommend glovers needles # 5 or # 6 for sewing.  (5 better for newbies, 6 for more experienced sewers).

  • Cedarwood Moose Leather 3 1/2 ounce

    34$ Canadian400$ Canadian

Sizes run from 7 sqft to 10 sqft, also available in bundles of 50 sq ft.  This is wild Moose from the Laurentian Mountains north of Montreal Canada. We gather them from hunters and have them tanned at a local tannery.  These quarter moose pieces are about 8 square feet (the tannery measures them). Moose are wild animals and the leather has “normal” moose life experience built into it, but we always select the best pieces possible. (and we guarantee our hide if you are not happy we would replace it)  If you are planning on using the suede side out, you might consider going for the ‘seconds’ to save some $$.  Our seconds suede is 95% perfect…it is classified as seconds because the smooth side might be scraped or have some colour variation on the smooth side…but the sued side colour is very very even.

  • Cedarwood Moose Leather 3.5oz (Full Hides)

    207$ Canadian280$ Canadian

Cedarwood – Full Moose Leather these are the very last hides for the year:  We decided to do them into Cedarwood because it is quickly becoming our favourite colour.  This tanning season we were playing with new colours and came up with Cedarwood.  We freaked when we first saw this colour out of the dye lot, we were not sure what to call it….but taking pictures on the cedar shingles on our house we realized that ‘Cedarwood’ was the perfect description. Very traditional, natural colour with amazing tones running from tan to rust. Alive with character and each piece quite unique on the smooth side while the suede side is a perfect even rust tone. The leather is extra special soft and the quality of the leather is 100%.  (these moose were legally hunted and I guarantee that they were eaten).  These hide are generally quite amazing, they are wild moose hides and moose live rough lives.  There are only limited holes and scraps.

Moose Leather 3 1/2 ounce is the PERFECT leather for moccasin and mitt making.  Easily sewn by hand, this leather is smooth one side and suede the other.  Extremely soft and supple but will make a pair of moccs that will last for years.  We gather our hides from local hunters who are feeding their families but don’t need the hides.  Our 3 1/2 is by far our most popular leather as it is so amazing for so many projects.

  • Cream Moose Leather 3.5oz

    46$ Canadian400$ Canadian

Cream Moose is brand new to Tribal Spirit and it is going to make some incredible moccasins and mitts!!  The skin/smooth side is so beautiful, the grain has just a touch of texture that accents slightly darker cream.  So the pattern/grain of moose hides is expressed in colour.  The suede side is 100% even and so very ‘tradish’ in colour shade.  Extremely soft and supple but will make a pair of moccs that will last for years.  We gather our hides from local hunters who are feeding their families but don’t need the hides.  This cream moose is sure to amaze!!  We recommend glovers needles # 5 or # 6 for sewing.  (5 better for newbies, 6 for more experienced sewers). The seconds have a little too many marks on the smooth side (that is how we categorize seconds) the suede side is perfect 100%.  So if you are using suede side out….great way to catch a deal.

  • Moose Leather Bundle Seconds Sale

    162$ Canadian325$ Canadian

Moose ‘Seconds’ Leather Bundle Sale!   25 and 50 square foot bundles! Available in Gold, Brown, Cork, Black and Cedarwood.

Moose 3 1/2 ounce “seconds”.  This past year we dramatically increased the hides that we gather/recycle from local hunters who are eating the meat but discarding the hides..  With every batch of leather we tan, there is always a certain percentage that is not perfect.  Moose hides are often pulled out of the bush, cuz they are REALLY heavy and the skin side gets scratched.  This reduces the skin side/smooth side from a # 1 quality to a ‘seconds”.  The grain/skin side is not perfect BUT the suede side is very nice: 98% perfect.  So if you like to make Moccs, Mitts or general crafting using the suede side out, then this leather is perfect and a great deal!!  And economically ideal for workshop situations where people are learning leather work.  These quarter moose run about 4 to 7 sq ft.  Bundles will contain several pieces adding up to either 25 sq ft or 50 sq ft.  (btw we calculate it takes 4 sq ft to make a pair of moccs, and 5  sq ft for a pair of mitts and we have patterns if you need.  We have moccasin patterns which you can request in the comment section as you are checking out).

  • Leather drum ‘blankie’
